Back to School Night is for Parents, Not Children

I have a quick rant if there is such a thing? Last night was Back to School night at my DD’s elementary school and it was terrible what I saw! I was appalled with all the noise that went on through the short 15 minute PTA meeting and the Principal’s talk about how the students and the school faired on last years test scores.

When did Back to School night become a family affair? This night is not for the kids. It’s for the parents to meet the teacher and get an overview of how the teacher runs their classrooms. It’s a night to hear what your principal’s message is and find out how your school is doing. Parents if you can’t get a baby sitter then it is your job to keep your children quiet while the PTA and Principal’s are giving you important information. It is your job to listen carefully so you don’t ask a question that was covered during the speeches! If you’re a two parent family then one parent should stay home with the kids and the other parent should attend.

But if it is absolutely necessary for you to make Back to School night a family event then teach (your kids), model the behavior and show respect to the speakers of the evening by doing your jobs as parents and keep your children quiet.
