Meet Retired Racer Peso

Peso3jpg_1 November 5th brought my first foster Greyhound. Her name is Peso and she's two years old. She's a beautiful silky black that is as soft to touch as look at. In just over seven days she has had many firsts. She's learned to live with my three dogs, eat kibble, use the stairs off my deck and ride in the Blazer to visit Petsmart.

Peso has a beautiful personality. She's calm in the house, but a wild running dog outside. She enjoys chasing after my dogs while I throw the ball. She enjoys carrying around the few plush toys I have. Her fist night with me she slept until 5 am and has woken earlier the following days. The early rise time is expected because that was a part of their routine at the racing kennel. I slowly introduced her to things inside the house because she was still recovering from her spay. The first few days she mostly stayed on leash. By last Wednesday she was with exception of eating with my dogs fully integrated into our daily routine.

She's learned quickly too. She has a handle on some of my most basic rules. Paws off my counters, the first command she learned was off. I use off to let my dogs know not to go near or get off of something. By the end of day two she understood what off meant. She's also learned move, back, lay down, we're working on sit, but it's not an easy position for many Greyhounds. She's walked beautifully on leash from day one with little correction from me. She walks so well my eight-year-old can walk her. She enjoys my entire family and our various activities and though she's only been with me a week, I feel she's ready for her forever home which is both a happy and sad occasion. Happy because she is going to be a wonderful companion for a lucky family and sad because no matter how hard you try it's hard not to get attached.

Check out her photos in the foster album to the left. If you're interested in adopting Peso or another greyhound visit Virginia Greyhound Adoption for more information and application details. Until next time puppy licks, woof, woof and roo.
