Peso Goes to Her Forever Home

Saturday was a bittersweet day for our family. Bittersweet might not be the best word, but right now at 5:30 am it's the only one that comes to mind. Our first foster Greyhound Peso found her new forever home!  It was a long day all around for the VAGA volunteers. Earlier that morning two volunteers drove to Wilson, NC to drop off a stunning grey named Grifster, he's actually going back to Florida to live in his new forever home with one of his littermates. My family and I would have failed if we fostered him. He had my heart from the moment I saw him.

While the two volunteers were dropping off Grifster, four others and myself were spending the afternoon at Petco talking to people about VAGA and Greyhounds. My family and I took Dexter and Peso to the Meet and Greet. Dexter was far more interested in the rodent cages, he showed his prey and play drive. Peso wasn't so happy to be at Petco, she was a little nervous. She spent most of her time outside in front of the store greeting people as they entered. Thankfully it warmed up nicely. By the time my husband brought her back into the store she was more relaxed. We took Peso to the Meet & Greet to help get rid of some of her pent up energy, for the last week she was only allowed leash walks in order to give her stitches time to heal.

Peso was healing great, her skin was scabbing and on the mend, but it broke my heart to have to keep her calm. When she got hurt she was just settling into a routine and good play time with my three dogs. She was enjoying her time outside and she especially enjoyed playing with Wyatt. Turns out Peso have a ball fetish too. When she got hurt we had to go back to being on leash all the time, she was amazing though, it didn't faze her. She remained calm and loving and somehow seemed to know that it was only temporary. I found out late Thursday evening that she would be going to her new forever home. She'll have a wonderful yard to run in and three children to play with. The e-mail I received from her new mom showed excitement in words. She wanted to know all about her new baby and I happily obliged.

Saturday evening Peso was picked up from my house by one of the VAGA volunteers that dropped Grifster off in NC and taken to Oak Hill, VA with another Grey Rusty who was fostered in my town and one other Grey from Florida. Sunday was their big day to meet their new families. I wish I could have been there to photograph it, but I know it was a wonderful, exciting and very tiring day for all involved and soon the new families will send updates and I have no doubts that they'll sound much the same as my updates on Dexter. All in all it was a wonderful experience and my family and I are ready to foster again when the time comes.
