Sunday a new foster Greyhound will arrive at my home. It's exciting and scary at the same time. I'm familiar with this particular Greyhound and know that he's gentle, loving and afraid of men. I worry that my dogs won't accept him, but I know they will, they love meeting new friends. My biggest worry with this particular grey is he won't be any happier at my home than he was at his last because there is a man in the house.
This big brindle male came up from Florida in November with my last foster and went to a family that was overjoyed to have him, but the kennel he came from neglected to pass along the crucial detail that he's afraid of men. Not a good thing to leave out when the big boy is going to a home where the man is hoping to have a faithful friend in his dog. This family is heartbroken and because they love him they've decided to let him go. It's not the families fault it's the irresponsible person who hurt him prior to adoption. Whether he can tolerate or get used to my husband is key. My hope is this grey will see that all men aren't bad.
The upside is the big boy has a possible home come next week, a home where he'll have the company of another greyhound, my first foster Peso. The downside is my husband and I only have five full days to work with and observe the grey's behavior. We can and will start desensitizing him to men but this is something that could take months, even years to get him over, a week just isn't long enough. No matter how long he stays with us, he'll get the love, attention and leadership he deserves.
Until next time Woof, Woof and a Roo.
