Books and More Books

I’ve knocked out another book. Actually it was a reread for
my book club. We’re starting off our summer reading with Lani Diane Rich’s Time
Off for Good Behavior. I enjoyed as much the second time around. It’s high time
I read all of her others, but before I’m allowed to add any more books to my
bookshelf I have at least 30 to read. My goal is to read at least ten of them
this summer, which ones I’ll read I have no idea until I choose it. That’s not
entirely true. My next book club book is Jodi Picoult’s Tenth Circle, I’ll
start that next week and I’ve chosen to read Richard Laymon’s The Traveling
Vampire Show between now and next week.

I’ve had people ask me how I’m able to read so much and
there’s no trick really except that I make reading a priority just like I make
writing. It’s also easier to read more when you’re revising and rewriting a
novel. I also go through periods where all I do is read one book after another
and then I can go a whole month without reading a thing. My goal is to read a
book a week the rest of this year. Luckily for me I have enough books on my bookshelf
to do that.

The only new book that I see in my future is Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows and I’ll start that as soon as it reaches my mailbox.
I’ll read at least two chapters a day out loud to my girls. We’ve been reading
the HP books together since my oldest was in second grade and she’s getting
ready to start her freshman year of high school. If she reads this I bet she’ll
groan that I mentioned I still read to her. Actually the HP books are it. My
youngest will sit and read but the oldest will choose an audio book if she’s
given the choice. I guess I don’t understand why someone would rather listen to
the book instead of reading it. I love that my kids want me to read the HP to
them, it’s time spent with both of them doing something we all love. Hopefully
we won’t be disappointed the way we were with the last one. My favorite book of
the series was the third one probably because my favorite character was Sirius
Black. My oldest DD is now an Eragon and Eldest fan and has both of them in
book and audio. I also admit that I too
am a fan and both of us are eagerly awaiting the third book.

Time for me to wrap this because Ice Spiders is starting on
the Sci-Fi channel.

Until next time Good Writing!

  1. I will also be reading HP outloud this summer. DS#1 is finishing his freshman year of high school a week from today. I was surprised he still wanted me to read this one outloud to him. I figured he'd want to read it himself. I'm also reading To Kill a Mockingbird outloud to him right now. He likes the movie (even wrote an essay on it for his religion class) and I kept telling him he should read it, but (as with me--and you it seems) he has a bunch of books to finish as well.

  2. Too Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all-time favorite books! DD#2 is trying to find a new series for me to read out loud. Personally I don't believe you're ever too old to be read too.
