Ruff Weather

If earlier this month was doggy heaven then the change in the weather the last few days is doggy hell! How do I a human know this besides the fact that I despise the heat and humidity? Well my black golden/poodle mix doesn’t want to play fetch and he’s OCD when it comes to fetch! Instead he rushes out all intent on playing only to retrieve his ball a few times and then he sits his butt right next to me on the steps. It’s as if he’s saying “Hey, the human has the right idea.”

I also see this change as my boy Wyatt is no longer a puppy, he’ll be three in September and he’s maturing. It’s not a huge change because if the weather changes and it’s 85 degrees or less with no or low humidity he’s ready to go. But remember that these heat waves are just as dangerous for our furry friends as they are for us.

Here’s a checklist for all of us to remember when we take our furry friends out for summer time fun.

Summer Safety Tips

• Never leave your dog unattended during the peak sun hours of the day or in a closed vehicle.
• Heatstroke can occur and lead to brain damage or death. Signs of heatstroke are panting, drooling, rapid pulse and fever. Cool your dog immediately with cool water and seek emergency veterinary care.
• All dogs should have proper identification at all times. A collar with an ID tag, along with a tattoo or a microchip.
• Dogs can get sunburn, especially shorthaired dogs and ones with white hair. Limit exposure when the UV Index is high, and apply sun block to his ears, nose and places where fur might not cover such as stomach or hind quarters 30 minutes before going outside.
• Always provide your dog fresh water.
• Talk with your veterinarian about flea and tick prevention medications. And don’t forget heartworm it is a common problem for dogs. Follow your vet's advice for heartworm precautions.
• Many lawn and garden products can and are hazardous. Make sure all plants and fertilizers within the dog's reach are non-toxic.

Until next time Woof, Woof and a Roo!
